The relationship series - Saturn in the fifth house

The 5th house is a crucial one for relationships and Saturn’s position in this house has a sobering and often limiting and restrictive impact on the house of self-expression as well as the other houses he aspects. These are the 7th house of committed relationships, the 11th house of friendships and a supportive community network as well as the 2nd house of family and family support. As everywhere Saturn goes, placed in the 5th house requires a lot of practice when it comes to romance and self-expression. Often, there is a resistance towards creativity and procreation that’s based on negative expectations. Enjoying life and having fun does not come easily to this Saturn – he actually has to work on it!

Equally, a person with Saturn in the 5th house automatically feels a lot of responsibility towards children who can even be experienced as a burden if the person is emotionally still too immature to consider them to be a gift. If this is the case, then children are brought up with a tight schedule and in a strict and disciplined environment. Although this is the basic karmic status of Saturn in this house, much of it depends on the sign Saturn is in the placement of the ruler of the 5th house.
When it comes to romance and marriage, this Saturn often has limiting and even negative expectations when it comes to their romantic life and its outcome. As with other Saturn placements, things become a lot easier after the 1st Saturn return at the age of around 31 and then again from 36 when Saturn matures in the chart. Leading up this point, painful experiences in a person’s romantic life eventually lead to realisation and some kind of wisdom – it’s the aha moment you need before moving on to bigger and better things and a neutral attitude towards the responsibilities this Saturn position sweeps in is the first step towards improvement.

But crucially, Saturn’s influence on the house of marriage also brings with it a welcome sense of commitment and the will to make the marriage or partnership last.

At the end of the day, this Saturn just needs to feel free and that he is not pushed into a corner. Saturn in the 5th house is scared of losing and failing professionally and in love so he aims high, forgetting how to have fun and play. In romance, this feeling of not being enough can at its worst result in a desire to be alone – but once you become aware of the fact that you may at times try and prove your worth too much, nothing stands in the way of a more fulfilling partnership.
